Friend's Birthday

Well yesterday was one of my good friend's birthday, so I had a reason to do something.  Yay!  First I went out with Karlie to grab dinner at one of the bars in town (that has the best bread pudding ever!), and then we went over to the birthday girl's house to get our party on.  Basically we just drank and amused ourselves at her house, which was fine.  But you know, it's amazing to me how easily alcohol can turn a bad time into a good time.  The first two hours I was there, I was frankly quite bored.  I didn't feel like drinking much, I was annoyed with some of the people there, just wasn't having a good time.  But then I decided if I was gonna be there, I might as well have fun, so I took some shots, and suddenly I'm having a good time!  Fantastic.

But it makes me think, I wish I could have fun without alcohol.  And I definitely can.  It's just, with the friends I have, that's usually what they like to do to have fun.  So I don't know what else to do.  So tell me, blog friends, what do you guys do with your friends when you want to have a good time?  Stuff that doesn't involve alcohol, or at least is not centered around that.  Something that can be done in a small town.

  1. Music and dancing, poolside cook outs, skating, bowling, shopping trips, pick up football/basketball games, day of hiking, hanging out at the bookstore/coffee shop, double features at the drive in, etc.

But I'm an old married lady, so what do I know what a good time is anymore? hehehe

  2. Thanks, TJ, I like a lot of those suggestions. Now I just need to find friends that would like to do those things, too. :-P

  3. I wish I had good suggestions for ya. I grew up in a small town and I can't think of a time when I got together with friends and alcohol wasn't involved.

    Sad, huh?

  4. I wish I could help also. I'm not a huge alcohol drinker. When I went out with people, I usually ordered a drink with the least amount in it and nursed it for most of the night. A Karoake hoedown contest is always fun. It can have those drinkers enjoy themselves while you can have fun too without drinking.

  6. Sorry, I screwed up that first comment.

It is harder to have a good time without alcohol, isn't it? Over the years, I noticed that when I don't drink, but others do, they seem to be having the time of their lives, while I seem to be bored and disappointed. It made me wonder what the reality of the situation was, and I pretty much stopped drinking to have fun, and started looking for ways to have more real fun, which, to me, requires getting to really know people, including their serious, less profane, less base sides. It's more work, of course, but the payoff's much better and you save a lot on booze.

  7. Hi there, I'm coming to Evanston here in a few weeks, so where is this bar that serves "the best bread pudding ever?"
